In 1966, with $5,000 in borrowed money, Douglas Tompkins opened the first The North Face store, in the San Francisco North Beach area. Two years later, he sold the North Face store to Dick, “Hap” Klopp who served as president and CEO for the next 20 years. Under his watch, the North Face name became synonymous with equipment innovations and originality, and was the pre-eminent supplier of skiwear and camping equipment to the mountaineering and backpacking community. Early on, the North Face introduced geodesic tents for extreme climate expeditions and Gor-Tex protective clothing for multiple-weather conditions. Today, the North Face supports world-class athletes whose superior performance attests to the innovative design of its equipment and the superiority of its high performance fabrics now integrated into all North Face products. Extreme skiers and snowboarders depend on North Face fleece jackets, waterproof softshells, hats and gloves; Big wall climbers choose North Face backpacks, tents, and sleeping bags, and endurance runners who consistently win use North Face footwear. The North Face brand is as solid and firm as Yosemite’s Half Dome and Kimball Jones increasingly carries a large selection of North Face products. |
