With the Eclipse 8099 Compass, Brunton has set a highwater benchmark for functionality and simplicity in the use of a compass. In other words, this is one easy compass to operate. If you're not up to speed in compass geek speak, 45 minutes reading the manual and following the simple illustrations, will have you looking like a pro in no time at all. The hardest part is determining your magnetic declination, the difference of where you are in the country, in relation to true north. But heck, you can get that number off of any USGS or BLM map. A quick rotation of a black dial called the azimuth ring and the declination is set forever, after that, it's all down hill. By aligning the patented blue circle over the red circle, you can always find the path towards your stated destination. The Eclipse will give you accurate forward field bearings as well as reverse bearings. Through triangulation, you can locate your position on a map. You can estimate the distance to object, tell how high the object is, and calculate the angle of ascent. The delicate portions of the compass are protected by a rugged, plastic top cover case, and bottom rubber shoe.
